Old School vs. New Technology

Old School vs. New Technology

Spring is almost here, and I like to set aside two weekends to spruce up my yard and deck.

The first weekend I pull weeds, trim bushes, and clean the deck.

The second weekend I plant flowers and lay about 60 bales of pine needles.

I live in North Carolina, home of longleaf pine forests, and we use the pine needles as decorative ground cover and mulch.

I had massively overgrown bushes to tackle on Saturday.

In the garage, I found the 1960’s style hedge clippers and an electric hedge trimmer.

I told myself that I couldn’t handle power equipment.

It is too dangerous to use when I am on a ladder.

I like using the “old school clippers”; they take me back to my youth.

My friend Julie stopped by on Sunday morning for our three-mile walk, and she marveled at all the work I had done.

She asked what I used to get the work done, and with pride, I showed her my 60’s style clippers.

She saw the electric clippers on the shelf and asked why I hadn’t used that tool, the one that could get the work done faster?

I shared my story that I don’t use power equipment and liked using the well-worn tool.

Being a good friend, she looked me in the eye and said, come with me; I am going to teach you how to make your life easier.

She remarked that I am the one who always learns new things, so why was I afraid to try?

She pointed out that I could continue using the outdated technology, or I could change my thought, learn something new and get the job done in 1/3 of the time.

As I was trimming my bushes, I thought about how learning to use the power clippers is similar to life coaching.

On your own, you might be able to work through your current struggle, or you can choose to make your life easier.

If you are struggling using outdated thinking, book a free session and see what it is like to work with a life coach who knows how to make your life easier.
