Who Do You Love The Most?
Love is such a broad word and there are so many varieties of love.
I love Greek mythology and the ancient Greeks described various kinds of love with a broad range of people including family, friends and themselves. They believed there are six words for love:
Eros-sexual passion
Philia-deep friendship
Ludus-playful love
Agape-love for everyone
Pragma-longstanding love
Philautia-love of the self
Wow, approximately 2,500 years ago there was talk about self love, yet most of us wouldn’t think to include ourselves if we were listing people we love.
Think about who you love the most. I am curious if you listed yourself? I’ll be honest, years ago when I did a class on self love it didn’t occur to me to put me on the list. It seemed selfish to list myself first.
But then I thought of the message that we hear on every flight from the attendant that in case of an emergency, the air mask will drop and we need to put it on ourselves before we help others.
So, if the flight mask drops, are you ready to love yourself so much that you take care of yourself first?
What prevents you from loving yourself more than others? You get to decide if loving yourself the most is a basic human need or a selfish moral flaw.
Below are five things you can do to move toward loving yourself the most:
Forgive yourself right now for any past mistakes or poor choices that didn’t align with you as your best self.
Accept who you are and embrace your strengths.
Stop comparing yourself to others.
Determine your purpose and share it with the world.
Find joy in the simple moments that surround you.
So, until I arrive in your inbox in two weeks, I hope you will embrace Philautia Love.
